As part of our ongoing efforts to educate,
the San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park
has taken a leadership role in maintaining an
environmentally friendly business

Some of the eco-friendly steps we have taken include:

  • Offering corn based eating ware and dishes for guest use (these items can be composted and replace plastic and Styrofoam items which were previously used).
  • Using online (paperless) communications and reference file methods whenever possible and using recycled paper for those communications that require hard copies.
  • Converting to waterless urinals and low flow toilets at our parks.

  • Participating in state and city programs to encourage reduced use of electricity and water built the first straw bale building to be permitted in the City of San Diego (the straw bale building houses the San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park's seed bank).
  • Employing a number of alternative construction methods and materials when building the new Beckman Center for Conservation Research, including a solar panel array for powering the building, low-level lighting, and the use of recycled materials in construction and interior decoration (this project recently was awarded the Silver-level Leadership award in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). We built the first straw bale building to be permitted in the City of San Diego (The straw- bale building houses the San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park's seed bank).
  • Maintaining an employee vanpooling program to encourage car-pooling.
  • Supporting on grounds recycling of materials and resource
